FARE network celebrates 10 years

The Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network celebrates 10 years of campaigning this weekend as over 100 fans, activists and NGO’s come together at the Franz-Horr-Stadium in Vienna, home of FK Austria.
The two day conference, on 13 and 14 December, will mark some of the network’s key achievements since its formation in Vienna in 1999, as well as looking forward to new challenges with a series of workshops looking at various areas of discrimination in the game.
FARE’s role in tackling racism at all levels of professional and amateur football has seen its membership grow to a presence in 40 countries across Europe. As well as monitoring activity at domestic football in all these nations, it now plays a role in major European tournaments through a partnership with UEFA.
The work of FARE has been supported by some of the biggest names in European football. Lillian Thuram and Marcos Senna are just two players who have assumed the role of ambassadors. Another is former Celtic, Aston Villa and Bari player, Paul Elliott who commented: “Discrimination in European football is a complex issue taking many forms, which is why the work of FARE remains so crucial. Its far-reaching presence into so many different countries means trends can be monitored and action taken.”
Kurt Wachter, from host FARE member, FairPlay-vidc, said: “The FARE network has had many successes in the past decade. We’ll be using this conference to look back at some of these, but also to new challenges ahead, such as the programme of work toward the European Championship in Poland and the Ukraine in 2012 and how to take the next step in challenging homophobia in football.”
A FARE media reception will take place on Sunday evening at SK Rapid Vienna’s Gerhard-Hanappi-Stadium. Speakers at the reception include UEFA representatives, the Austrian Football Association, the Austrian Football League, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and the City of Vienna.
These will joined by a host of current and former players such as Paul Elliott, Samuel Koejoe (Dunajská Streda, Freiburg), Yves Eigenrauch (Schalke 04), Oliver Prudlo (Wacker Innsbruck), chairman of the Austrian Players Union.
The Vienna networking conference “Football for Equality: Challenging Racism and Homophobia across” is supported by UEFA, the European Commission and the City of Vienna.

An open letter to Marcello Lippi

Since its inception in 1989 the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation has fought for the rights of gays and lesbians in sport. 20 years on we remain committed to this cause. And, with the help of organisations like the Football Against Racism Europe (FARE) network, and a membership base of over 30,000 people, we’re confident we can continue to make positive strides to ensure football, and sport in general, is open and accessible to all regardless of sexual preference. Building Bridges 3 Conference

Bulgarian Association for Gay Sport - BAGS took part at Building Bridges III Conference on 6th of March 2009 in The Hague, Netherlands. Here is the report from the Conference:

(Plenary morning sessions)
1.
The European level - Ms Kathelijne Buitenweg, Member of the European Parliament and Chair, Netherlands:
“This conference is in fact not about sport, but about equality, about law making. Laws are important, but they don’t create reality. Since 2000 all forms of discrimination are forbidden in the labour market and in the workplace. Also discrimination on the basis of race is forbidden in and beyond the labour market.
Kathelijne_Buitenweg However, sexual orientation is excluded from this article. Beyond the labour market there is no declaration against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The EP thought this unfair and wanted to correct this. It has been a long fight in the EP to correct this omission and it is still unclear whether the battle will be won when the European Parliament votes on this article. I hope we get 60% of the EP on board, but not everyone is in favour of the protection of rights on the basis of sexual orientation. Homophobia still is a problem. But this problem is hard to prove because most people remain silent about their sexual orientation and about the discrimination they experience as a result. Therefore most sport clubs conclude that the problem doesn’t exist. But gay athletes know different. A whole range of problems occur and in fact, all are about trust. In order to play you have to trust your team. And the thing is: as a gay or lesbian you can’t. Regarding discrimination against gays and lesbians, the nationally renowned Dutch football coach Louis van Gaal recently told gays and lesbians to ‘just bear with it.’ I find that shocking. If instead we were to talk about anti-Semitism, would he come to the same conclusion, that Jews should‘just bear with it’? Furthermore, it is important we deal with homophobia in sports not just on a national level, but on the European level as well. ” [Read more here...]
